SUPPORT WORLD ANTIBIOTICS AWARENESS WEEK

Following the World Health Organisation Antibiotics Awareness Week, KEDI Healthcare

has decided to enlighten you more concerning the abuse of these antibiotics drugs, below are some necessary information’s that will help enlighten you better what antibiotics is ,functions and also the side effect of the abuse of this drug.

Antibiotics are a group of medicines that are usedto treat infections caused by germs

(bacteria and certain parasites). Aparasite is a type of germ that needs to live on or in another living being(host). Antibiotics are sometimes called anti-bacteria’s or antimicrobials.Antibiotics can be taken by mouth as liquids, tablets, or

capsules or they canbe given by injection. Usually, people who need to have an

antibiotic by injection are in hospital because they have a severe infection. Antibiotics

arealso available as creams, ointments, or lotions to apply to the skin to treatcertain

skin infections.

It isimportant to remember that antibiotics only work against infections that arecaused by bacteria and certain parasites. They do not work against infectionsthat are caused by

viruses (for example, the common cold or flu), or fungi (forexample, thrush in the mouth

or vagina), or fungal infections of the skin.

Occasionally,a viral infection or minor bacterial infection develops into a more

serious secondary bacterial infection.

There arevarious antibiotics available and they come in various different brand names.

Antibiotics are usually grouped together based on how they work. Each type ofantibiotic only works against certain types of bacteria or parasites. This iswhy different antibiotics

are used to treat different types of infection.

How do antibiotics work?

Someantibiotics work by killing germs (bacteria or the parasite). This is oftendone by

interfering with the structure of the cell wall of the bacterium orparasite. Some work by

stopping bacteria or the parasite from multiplying.

Which antibiotic is usually prescribed?

The choice of antibiotic mainly depends on which infectionyou have and the germ (bacterium or parasite) your doctor thinks is causingyour infection. This is because each

antibiotic is effective only againstcertain bacteria and parasites. For example, if you have pneumonia, the doctorknows what kinds of bacteria typically cause most cases of

pneumonia. He or shewill choose the antibiotic that best combats those kinds of bacteria.

Side-effects of misusing and overusing?

Misusing andoverusing antibiotics can put us at all risk:

1:accelerates emergenceof antibiotic resistance

2:causebacteria to become resistant

3: it is thebacteria itself

4:commoninfections will no longer be treatable
